THE STORY SO FAR

Finchley Paper Arts was born out of our love for the arts, combined with history and worldwide photographic endeavors.  While researching vintage ephemera products for our web site, a cousin contacted us with a wealth of family genealogy data.  He did not have any photos of the family members he had researched, so the hunt was on to put photos to the names.  It was lucky for everyone that the Great Grandparents’ past was in storage, and a treasure of images, books and documents were found.  Now the painstaking research began
to assemble a family history, of which no records existed.   Many generations ago in Cambridge England, bookstores, publishing and even a mobile library were some of the many passions of our family.  At some point in the 1740’s a large private library came up for auction.  A London bookseller purchased the 50,000 book collection.  It seems that our family must have purchased a good selection from this library.  Several of these books contained the personal bookplate of Lady Henrietta Cavendish Holles of Wellbeck Abbey in Sherwood Forest.  Lady Henrietta and her family were ardent book collectors and her books date from the 1600’s to 1740’s.  Her collection consisted of the best literary works of the time.  This find provided us with a starting point for source material, that we could reproduce for the paper arts market.  Combined with old family letters, photos and documents, Finchley Paper Arts was born.  Finchley was the last home of our Great Grandparents before immigrating to Canada in the early 1900’s.  We thought it fitting to use the Finchley name to re-establish our family in the publishing industry, this time with a unique focus on the needs of the mixed media artist.
